Most DNP projects acquire their theory backwards: the intervention is chosen first and a theory is added at writing-up to satisfy a requirement. The prompt asks for the other order, and the way to show you have used it is to name a project decision the theory determined. Orem's self-care deficit theory, applied to a heart-failure project, tells you to assess self-care agency before assuming an education deficit — which changes your baseline measurement and may change the intervention from teaching to removing a barrier. Neuman's systems model asks which line of defence you are reinforcing and at which level of prevention, which changes who you enrol. Watson's caring theory pushes the outcome toward patient experience rather than throughput. In each case the theory is doing something a reader can point at. Say which decision changed, and the post immediately reads as a project with a theory rather than a theory with a project.

Define the theory properly on the way, because the prompt asks for that too. Name its major concepts and the propositions connecting them, say what it claims nursing is for, and place it — grand theory, middle-range or practice-level — since the level determines how much guidance you can reasonably expect. Grand theories give you a worldview and very little operational direction; middle-range theories such as uncertainty in illness or symptom management are much easier to convert into variables, which is why they suit DPI Projects better. Say something about its contribution to the profession as the brief requires, and keep it honest: a theory's contribution is usually that it made a previously invisible aspect of nursing describable and therefore researchable. Then close on the guidance: which concept becomes your measure, which proposition becomes your hypothesis, and what you would conclude if the data contradicted the theory.
