Evidence Based Practice: For Nurses Essay

Two sections with an unusual instruction hidden in the first. Drop the comparison from your PICO before you turn it into a recommendation, and give three stakeholders three genuinely different jobs.

01

Why the comparison comes out of the PICO

The instruction to remove the comparison is the part worth pausing on, because it is a genuine methodological point rather than a formatting whim. A PICO question carries a C because it is built to be answerable by research: intervention against usual care, one tool against another. A practice change recommendation is not a question and has no alternative arm; it is a statement of what this unit will now do. Leaving the C in produces a recommendation that reads as though the department will implement both arms of a trial, which is incoherent, and the template is built to catch exactly that. So write the P, the I and the O as a single declarative sentence about your emergency department, your patients and the outcome you expect. Anything that still names an alternative arm is a question wearing the clothes of a decision, and the template is built to catch it.

The two article types are marked separately and they support the recommendation in different ways, which is the distinction the assignment exists to teach. The research synthesis gives you findings: which aggression risk instruments have been studied in emergency settings, what their sensitivity and specificity look like, whether screening changed assault rates. The non-research piece gives you the administrative case: what interventions nurse administrators can actually authorise, what the organisational barriers are, what a policy change costs. Say which is doing which. Then treat the three stakeholders as an implementation question rather than a list of job titles. Each needs a different role and each role has to be something that person can actually do, so a nurse educator trains, a nurse administrator authorises and funds, and a charge nurse embeds the screen into triage. Different verbs, not three people who support it. Different verbs are what make the section pass.

Likely learning objectives

  • Convert a PICO question into a practice change recommendation without the comparison.
  • Distinguish what research and non-research evidence each contribute to a recommendation.
  • Place in-text citations at the end of the supporting statement as the template requires.
  • Assign implementation roles that differ by the authority each stakeholder holds.

Review every instruction before using the planning guidance that follows.

Research: Literature Synthesis: Patient Aggression Risk Assessment Tools in the Emergency Department Non-research: Ensuring Workplace Safety: Evidence Supporting Interventions for Nurse Administrators. Only use template provided (APA format) not including cover page, 4-5pgs Must include. Recommended Practice Change · Be sure you include your recommendation for your practice change, using your EBP question (remove the comparison) · Next, State how the research article supports this practice change recommendation, then include the in-text citation at the end of the statement Example: The research article demonstrated use of Pilates increased strength, balance, and reduced falls among participants (Smith, 2020). · Finally, state how the non-research articles supports this practice change recommendation, then include the in-text citation at the end of the statement · All of these elements must be included for this section to pass 5. Key Stakeholders · State 3 stakeholders (by their position- wound nurse, nurse educator, nurse administrator, etc) and state their role in helping get the practice change started. They each need a different role (job)

Course-wide instructions that accompany this question

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

02

What each template section must contain

  1. 01A recommended practice change stated from your EBP question with the comparison removed.
  2. 02A statement of how the research article supports it, with an in-text citation at the end.
  3. 03A statement of how the non-research article supports it, cited the same way.
  4. 04Three key stakeholders identified by position, each with a different role.
  5. 05Only the provided template, in APA format, 4-5 pages excluding the cover page.
03

From PICO to recommendation to stakeholders

01

The PICO, minus the C

Restate your question as a declarative recommendation for your own department.

What the assessor is likely looking for

No comparison arm surviving into the recommendation.

02

What the research article shows

State the finding from the aggression risk assessment synthesis that supports the change.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A finding named, with the citation at the end of the statement.

03

What the non-research article supports

State the administrative or organisational case the non-research piece makes.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A different kind of support, not a repetition of the research finding.

04

Stakeholder one: authority to fund

Name the administrator role and what it must approve for the change to start.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A role defined by decision authority.

05

Stakeholder two: authority to teach

Name the education role and the specific training the change requires.

What the assessor is likely looking for

Training content tied to the instrument being adopted.

06

Stakeholder three: authority at the point of care

Name the frontline role that embeds the screen into an existing workflow.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A workflow insertion point, not general support.

04

Where aggression screening evidence sits

Recommended databases

  • PubMed Central
  • CINAHL
  • OSHA
  • American Nurses Association

Search sequence

  1. 1.Read both supplied articles before drafting the recommendation sentence.
  2. 2.Look up the aggression risk instruments by name to check the setting they were validated in.
  3. 3.Check the OSHA healthcare workplace violence guidance for the administrative case.
  4. 4.Find the professional association position statement for the stakeholder section.
05

Reference shortlist

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Workplace Violence in Healthcare

StatPearls, NCBI Bookshelf, National Library of Medicine · 2024

Review before citing

Workplace violence in healthcare, for the scale of the problem the change addresses.

Workplace Violence

American Nurses Association · 2024

Review before citing

The professional position statement, useful for the stakeholder roles section.

06

Before you submit the template

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the comparison in the recommendation, which the template is built to fail.
  • Treating the non-research article as a weaker version of the research one.
  • Placing citations mid-sentence when the template specifies the end of the statement.
  • Naming three stakeholders who all have the same supporting role.
  • Departing from the supplied template because another structure reads better.

Submission checklist

  • Is the comparison genuinely absent from your recommendation sentence?
  • Have you said what the research article specifically demonstrates?
  • Have you said what the non-research article specifically supports?
  • Do the three stakeholders hold three different kinds of authority?
  • Did you use the supplied template without altering its sections?
