Evidence-based Counselling
Four of the five requirements are critique rather than summary, and the multivariate models question is the one that decides the grade. Mediator and moderator are different claims.

Mediator and moderator are two different claims
The title of the article names two distinct statistical claims and confusing them is the commonest error in this assignment. A mediator sits on the causal path: attachment influences perfectionism, which in turn influences depressive mood, so perfectionism is how the effect travels. A moderator changes the strength or direction of a relationship without being on that path, so the association between attachment and mood would be stronger at high perfectionism than at low. The same variable can be tested as both, which is what this study does, and your key variables section should identify the independent, dependent and third variable and say which role is being tested where. Getting that right in the first paragraph is what makes the rest of the critique legible, because the threats and the model limitations differ between the two claims and a reader cannot follow you otherwise. That is also the sentence that determines which limitations matter later.
Take the validity and reliability question as a psychometrics question rather than a study quality one, because that is what reported statistics means here: Cronbach's alpha or a comparable internal consistency coefficient for each instrument, evidence of construct validity from the original validation work, and whether the coefficients reported in this sample match those reported elsewhere. Threats to internal validity are separate, and in a cross-sectional correlational design of this kind the honest list is short and specific: temporal precedence cannot be established, so mediation is inferred rather than demonstrated; common method variance inflates associations when every variable comes from the same self-report at the same variance inflates associations when every variable comes from the same self-report at the same sitting; and unmeasured third variables remain open. The distinction between an instrument property and a design property is worth making explicitly, because the assignment asks for both and they are answered from different parts of the paper.
The strengths and limitations of the multivariate models is where the marks concentrate, so address the model itself. Ask whether the sample size supports the number of paths being estimated, whether the mediation was tested with a method that gives a confidence interval for the indirect effect rather than a sequence of significance tests, and what the model assumes that this data may not satisfy, including linearity and the absence of measurement error in the mediator. Say what the analysis does well too, since a critique that finds only faults reads as a checklist rather than as a judgement, and the multivariate approach is genuinely doing something a sequence of correlations could not. None of that requires you to re-run the analysis; it requires you to read the method section as carefully as the discussion, which is the habit the CACREP standard is actually asking you to build.
Likely learning objectives
- Distinguish mediation from moderation as statistical claims.
- Read reliability and validity as reported psychometric statistics.
- Identify internal validity threats specific to cross-sectional designs.
- Critique a multivariate model rather than its findings.

Search sequence
- 1.Read the article's method section twice before writing anything.
- 2.Look up mediation and moderation definitions to use the terms correctly.
- 3.Check what internal consistency coefficient is conventionally acceptable.
- 4.Find a methods source on mediation testing for the model critique.

Before you submit the critique
Common mistakes
- Treating mediation and moderation as the same relationship.
- Summarising the findings instead of critiquing the method.
- Answering the reliability question with a general comment on study quality.
- Listing generic validity threats rather than ones this design creates.
- Evaluating the conclusions rather than the models.
Submission checklist
- Have you distinguished the mediator and moderator claims?
- Are the reported reliability coefficients identified specifically?
- Do the validity threats follow from this study's design?
- Does the model critique address sample size and assumptions?
- Is the second reference genuinely used rather than appended?
