HLT 312 Assignment Health Disparities Among Diverse Populations
The presentation is for the class and the flyer is for the community. Two audiences, and the flyer is the one that exposes whether the analysis produced anything usable.

The flyer is the test of whether the analysis is usable
The second deliverable is what makes this assignment more than a data presentation. A flyer goes to members of the community you have just analysed, which means everything you found has to survive translation into a page someone would pick up, read and act on. That is a real test. A slide reporting that a group experiences higher age-adjusted mortality from a condition is defensible academically and useless on a flyer; the same finding expressed as who should be screened, at what age, where locally and at what cost, is something a reader can use. Draft the flyer early rather than last, because discovering at the end that your analysis produces no actionable message usually means the analysis stopped one step short. It is also the only deliverable a community member would ever see. Everything you found has to survive translation into a page someone would pick up, read and act on.
For the presentation itself, compare against the national average as the brief instructs and be careful about two things. First, aggregate categories conceal as much as they reveal, since Asian American as a single category spans populations with very different outcomes, and saying so is a mark of a careful analysis rather than an evasion. Second, keep the barriers section causally honest: race is not a biological cause of most disparities, and the pathways that carry the effect are insurance coverage, geography, occupational exposure, discrimination in care, language and the accumulated effects of income. Naming the pathway for each disparity is what turns a comparison into an explanation, and it also tells the group which interventions could plausibly work, which is what the flyer will need. Naming the pathway is also what makes the flyer's message defensible. Interventions follow from pathways, not from categories, and the group will need them for the flyer.
Likely learning objectives
- Treat the flyer as the test of whether the analysis produced anything usable.
- Compare a minority group's health status against national figures.
- Recognise what aggregate racial and ethnic categories conceal.
- Name the pathway carrying each disparity rather than the category.

Details: This is a CLC assignment. Students will be assigned to groups by the course instructor. This is a two-part assignment that will consist of a presentation and an accompanying flyer. Part 1: Presentation Develop a 10-15 slide presentation, using PowerPoint or Prezi that includes the following information: Analyze the health care status of a specific minority group. Select a minority group that is represented in the United States (examples include: American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian American, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander). Compare the health status of the minority group you have selected to the national average. What is the current health status of this minority group? What health disparities exist for this group? HLT 312 Assignment Health Disparities Among Diverse Populations You will find important health information regarding minority groups by exploring the following resources: “Minority Health” and “Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations,” both of which are located on the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. Explain the cultural and socioeconomic barriers to health. How do race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and education influence health for the minority group you have selected? A minimum of three references must be used for this assignment. The title slide and reference slide are not counted in required minimum slide count. Part 2: Flyer Develop a one-page flyer that describes a healthy prevention strategy to address one of the 10 leading causes of death for the minority group you have selected. Refer to the resource “HealthyPeople 2020” for information regarding healthy prevention strategies. Include the flyer in your group’s presentation. While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected and in-text citations and references should be included within the presentation using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
What the CLC assignment requires
- 01A 10-15 slide presentation in PowerPoint or Prezi.
- 02An analysis of the health care status of a specific minority group represented in the United States.
- 03A comparison of that group's health status to the national average, including current status and existing disparities.
- 04An explanation of the cultural and socioeconomic barriers to health.
- 05How race, ethnicity and socioeconomic factors bear on health status.
- 06An accompanying flyer.

Search sequence
- 1.Use the OMH population profile for the comparison figures.
- 2.Find data disaggregated below the aggregate category where possible.
- 3.Read on the pathways carrying disparities before writing the barriers section.
- 4.Look for a community-level intervention with evidence for the flyer's message.

Before you submit
Common mistakes
- Leaving the flyer to the end and finding the analysis has no message.
- Treating a broad category as one population.
- Implying race is a biological cause of a disparity.
- Reporting differences without naming the pathway that produces them.
- Writing a flyer at the reading level of the presentation.
Submission checklist
- Does the flyer contain an action a reader could take?
- Is the comparison made against national figures with sources?
- Is the limitation of the aggregate category acknowledged?
- Does each disparity have a named pathway?
- Is the flyer written for the community rather than the class?
