Explain each sampling technique discussed in the “Visual Learner: Statistics” in your own words, and give examples of when each technique would be appropriate.

Definitions are the easy half. The examples of when each technique is appropriate are what the post is graded on, and the useful ones are clinical.

01

The examples are the assessment, not the definitions

Every post in the forum will contain the definitions, so the examples are where the marks actually sit, and the useful ones are clinical rather than generic. Simple random sampling needs a complete list of the population and gives every member an equal chance, which makes it appropriate when you have a full patient registry and no reason to expect subgroups to differ. Systematic sampling takes every nth case from an ordered list and is what you use for a chart audit, where pulling every twelfth record from a year's admissions is far easier than generating random numbers. Stratified sampling divides the population first and samples within each stratum, and it is the right answer whenever a subgroup is small but important, such as ensuring a satisfaction survey of a mostly adult unit still contains enough paediatric responses to say anything. Give each an example that would not fit the others.

Cluster sampling is the one students most often confuse with stratified, and the distinction is worth stating plainly: stratified sampling takes some members from every group, while cluster sampling takes all members from some groups. Cluster is used when the population is geographically dispersed and a full list does not exist, such as sampling twelve clinics across a state and surveying everyone in them. Convenience sampling takes whoever is available, which is what most student projects actually do, and the honest treatment names its weakness rather than apologising for it: the sample may differ systematically from the population in ways you cannot measure, so findings do not generalise. Purposive sampling deliberately selects information-rich cases and is appropriate in qualitative work where representativeness was never the aim. Say which are probability methods and which are not, because that division is what determines whether inferential statistics are legitimate at all.

Likely learning objectives

  • Explain each sampling technique in plain language.
  • Match each technique to a situation that calls for it.
  • Distinguish stratified from cluster sampling precisely.
  • Separate probability from non-probability methods and say why it matters.

Course-wide instructions that accompany this question

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS Discussion Questions (DQ) Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. Weekly Participation Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. APA Format and Writing Quality Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. HLT 362 Topic 2 DQ 2 I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition. Use of Direct Quotes I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. LopesWrite Policy For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. Late Policy The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. Communication Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.

03

Each technique with the situation that calls for it

01

What the assessor is likely looking for

The sampling frame requirement named.

02

Systematic sampling

Explain the nth-case method and its practical advantage in audits.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A situation where it is genuinely easier than random selection.

03

Stratified sampling

Explain sampling within groups and when a subgroup must be protected.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A small but important subgroup identified.

04

Cluster sampling

Explain sampling whole groups and contrast it with stratified.

What the assessor is likely looking for

The some-from-all versus all-from-some distinction.

05

Convenience and purposive sampling

Explain non-probability methods and what they cost.

What the assessor is likely looking for

Limitations stated rather than apologised for.

06

Why the division matters

Connect probability sampling to the legitimacy of inference.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A consequence for what can be concluded.

Search sequence

  1. 1.Read the topic material first, since the post must cover the techniques it presents.
  2. 2.Look up a study design source for the probability and non-probability division.
  3. 3.Search for a published study using each method to source your examples.
  4. 4.Check sampling bias so the convenience section is accurate.
05

Reference shortlist

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Before you post to the Topic 2 forum

Common mistakes

  • Reproducing textbook definitions rather than explaining in your own words.
  • Giving examples that could apply to any technique.
  • Confusing stratified with cluster sampling.
  • Treating convenience sampling as simply a weaker random sample.
  • Never distinguishing probability from non-probability methods.

Submission checklist

  • Is every technique from the material covered?
  • Does each have an example that would not fit another technique?
  • Is the stratified and cluster distinction stated explicitly?
  • Are your examples clinical rather than generic?
  • Have you identified which methods support inference?
