Deciding who the announcement is actually for

The report half is straightforward and the announcement half contains the real decision. Cholera is transmitted through water and food contaminated with faecal matter, and the definitive interventions are safe water supply and sanitation, which are infrastructure. A person living in an affected settlement cannot build a treatment plant, so an announcement telling them to drink safe water may be addressing someone with no means to comply. That makes audience selection the assignment's actual analytical choice: an announcement aimed at households can carry household water treatment, handwashing and, critically, oral rehydration, because the case fatality difference between treated and untreated cholera is enormous and rehydration is something a family can start; an announcement aimed at donors or officials can carry the infrastructure argument. That choice should be made explicitly and defended, since the brief asks for a specific audience and the two options lead to completely different announcements.

Get the clinical content right in the report, because it is the part a marker can check against a source. Cholera is caused by toxigenic Vibrio cholerae; most infections are mild or asymptomatic, and the severe form produces profuse painless watery diarrhoea that can cause fatal dehydration within hours; the mainstay of treatment is rapid rehydration, oral in most cases and intravenous in severe ones, with antibiotics playing a secondary role in severe disease; and diagnosis is clinical during an outbreak with laboratory confirmation for surveillance. Note the speed of deterioration explicitly, since it is what makes the public health response urgent rather than routine. Then the public health section should cover water and sanitation, oral cholera vaccine as a complement rather than a substitute, surveillance and case management, and the reason outbreaks concentrate in displacement and conflict settings. Each of those points is checkable against a source, which is where a report earns or loses its marks.

Details: This is a two-part assignment. Part 1 is a narrative report and Part 2 is a public service health announcement. You will identify and explain the effect of the water supply on the development of cholera in developing countries. Part 1: Report In a report of 750-1,000-words, address the following: The agent responsible for cholera. The symptoms, treatment, and diagnosis of cholera. Relationship between the water supply and cholera. Public health efforts to reduce cholera illness in developing countries. Utilize a minimum of three references to support your claims. Prepare this part of the assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required. Part 2: Public Service Health Announcement Develop a public service health announcement. The PSHA should: Have a clear message. Be targeted toward a specific audience. Be persuasive in nature. Grab the viewer’s attention. Be brief. Support statements with evidence. Contain photos and text (voice and music are optional). You may use iMovie, iPhoto, Photostory for Windows, Windows MovieMaker, Adobe Premiere Elements, or Web 2.0 tools such as JayCut or Animoto. Post the PSHA to TeacherTube or SchoolTube. If you do not have an account, create one and post the PSHA. APA format is not required for the PSA, but solid academic writing is expected. This assignment uses a grading rubric. Use of Direct Quotes I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
