Nursing questions
Discussion postNursing leadership

Examine the effect of legal, ethical, and regulatory processes on nursing practices (and/or change to providers), healthcare delivery, and outcomes while maintaining balance with administrative and fiscal responsibilities.

The learning objective printed above the question is the constraint. Innovation has to be argued against legal, ethical and regulatory limits and against a budget, which is what makes it a graduate question.

Innovation inside a regulatory and fiscal boundary

Read the learning objective printed above the question, because it is doing the grading. It asks about legal, ethical and regulatory processes while maintaining balance with administrative and fiscal responsibilities, which means the post is not about having good ideas but about getting them through a system designed to resist them. That reframing changes what counts as an answer. Scope of practice regulation is the most obvious example: an innovation that moves a task from a physician to a nurse practitioner is a good idea in some states and unlawful in others, so the innovation and the advocacy are the same project. Say that explicitly, because it converts a general enthusiasm for change into an argument about mechanism, which is what the objective is testing. The ethical strand of that objective is rarely about the innovation itself and usually about who carries the risk while it is being tested, which is worth saying where ethics is normally treated as a formality.

The prompt then hands you three levers and expects each to be developed rather than listed. Leadership skill is the unit-level lever: psychological safety, so staff will raise ideas; sponsorship, so a good idea acquires an owner senior enough to fund it; and protected time, because innovation done in gaps between patients does not survive a busy week. Organisational policy is the structural lever: a pathway for a frontline proposal to be tested, a shared governance council with real authority, and a clear route through the ethics and regulatory review that a new practice will need. Political advocacy is the external lever, and it reaches the things a single organisation cannot change, principally scope of practice, reimbursement for nursing services, and staffing legislation. Then satisfy the fiscal half of the objective directly: name what your example costs, who pays, and what return would justify it, since an innovation with no business case is one a nurse executive cannot defend.

Likely learning objectives

  • Frame innovation as movement through legal and regulatory constraints.
  • Distinguish unit-level, organisational and political levers for change.
  • Identify scope of practice as both a barrier and an advocacy target.
  • Attach a business case to a proposed innovation.

Instructions Answer the following question: How can you facilitate innovation in the field of nursing? This may include a combination of leadership skill, organizational policy development, or advocacy of political change. Explain how these (and other) factors contribute to facilitating and driving innovation. Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format. The post and responses are valued at 20 points. Please review post and response expectations. Please review the rubric to ensure that your response meets criteria. Estimated time to complete: 2 Hours

Course-wide instructions that accompany this question

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS Discussion Questions (DQ) Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. NU636 Unit 5 DQ 2 One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. Weekly Participation Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. APA Format and Writing Quality Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition. Use of Direct Quotes I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. LopesWrite Policy For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. Late Policy The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. Communication Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.

02

What NU636 Unit 5 DQ 2 asks for

  1. 01An answer to how you can facilitate innovation in the field of nursing.
  2. 02Coverage of leadership skill, organisational policy development and advocacy of political change.
  3. 03An explanation of how these and other factors contribute to driving innovation.

03

Three levers, each tested against the constraint

01

The constraint the objective sets

Establish that innovation is being assessed against regulatory and fiscal limits.

What the assessor is likely looking for

The objective read as the grading criterion.

02

Leadership as the unit-level lever

Cover psychological safety, sponsorship and protected time.

What the assessor is likely looking for

Mechanisms rather than leadership qualities.

03

Policy as the structural lever

Describe the pathway a frontline idea travels to become a tested change.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A route through governance, ethics and regulatory review.

04

Advocacy as the external lever

Identify what only legislative change can move, including scope of practice.

What the assessor is likely looking for

Specific policy targets rather than a call for a nursing voice.

05

The business case

Cost one concrete innovation and say what return would justify it.

What the assessor is likely looking for

The fiscal half of the objective directly answered.

04

Where nursing innovation evidence sits

Recommended databases

  • PubMed Central
  • NCBI Bookshelf
  • AHRQ
  • CINAHL

Search sequence

  1. 1.Look up scope of practice regulation and its variation between states.
  2. 2.Search psychological safety in healthcare teams for the leadership lever.
  3. 3.Read a shared governance or implementation source for the policy lever.
  4. 4.Find evidence on full practice authority for the advocacy section.
05

Reference shortlist

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

SCOPE OF PRACTICE

Nursing Fundamentals, NCBI Bookshelf · 2023

Review before citing

Scope of practice, for the regulatory barrier that innovation runs into first.

06

Before you post to the Unit 5 forum

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring the learning objective and writing about innovation in the abstract.
  • Listing the three levers without developing any of them.
  • Proposing an innovation without addressing what it costs.
  • Treating scope of practice as fixed rather than as an advocacy target.
  • Offering opinions with no citations, which the brief explicitly requires.

Submission checklist

  • Have you engaged the legal, ethical and regulatory framing of the objective?
  • Are all three levers developed rather than named?
  • Is there a costed example somewhere in the post?
  • Have you identified a specific regulatory barrier?
  • Is every claim supported by a citation?
