Explain the two general effects hormones have on cells: direct effects, or obvious changes in cell function, and permissive effects, or less obvious changes that facilitate cell function NURS530
A recorded explanation rather than a paper, and the format changes everything. Four to seven minutes on one distinction means you can afford exactly one worked example.

Teaching is the assessment, not the paper
The purpose sentence tells you what is being marked: demonstrate understanding through teaching and explanation. That is a different task from writing an accurate account, and it changes how you prepare. Four to seven minutes is roughly six hundred to a thousand spoken words, which means one clear distinction, one worked example and one summary is the entire budget. Anything more and you will either rush or overrun, and both are visible immediately in a recording. Script it rather than improvising, then read it aloud with a timer, because the gap between how long you think a slide takes and how long it takes is where most of these presentations go wrong. Rehearse the recording end to end before you keep a take, because timing problems only become visible when the words are actually spoken rather than read. Post the topic early too, since the clearest examples are claimed first.
The content itself is a genuine conceptual distinction that students frequently blur. A direct effect is the one people picture: the hormone binds its receptor and the cell does something observable, insulin binding and glucose transporters moving to the membrane. A permissive effect is subtler and more interesting, because the hormone produces no obvious change by itself but is required for another hormone to act at full strength. Thyroid hormone is the standard example, since it upregulates beta-adrenergic receptors so that catecholamines produce their full effect, which is why a hypothyroid patient responds poorly to sympathetic stimulation and a thyrotoxic one appears adrenergically overdriven on normal catecholamine levels. Choose one such pairing and carry it all the way through, showing the receptor, the second messenger and the clinical consequence, because a permissive effect explained without a clinical consequence is a definition rather than an explanation.
Likely learning objectives
- Distinguish direct from permissive hormone effects at the receptor level.
- Select a single example that demonstrates the distinction clinically.
- Budget content to a strict recorded time limit.
- Design a visual aid that supports spoken explanation rather than duplicating it.

NURS530 Advanced Physiology and Pathophysiology Week 4 Assignment Video Presentation The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate understanding through teaching and explanation. Begin by choosing one of the topics below, or propose a topic of your own interest from the assigned readings subject to instructor approval. Post your choice to the discussion board thread “Video Presentation Topics” as soon as you make your choice. You may not select a topic that has already been chosen by a classmate. The sooner you choose, the more options you will have. For this assignment, you will produce a 4–7 minute audio–video presentation on your chosen topic. Record, Upload, and Submit The Kaltura Desktop Recording tool is available for free to WCU students to assist with recording video assignments. Another software or tool may be used to record your assignment. Completed videos are required to be uploaded to your Kaltura My Media area before they can be submitted in the Blackboard assignment area via Mashups Tool > Kaltura Media. Kaltura Mashups Tool In your presentation, include the following: Include at least one type of visual aid in your presentation such as PowerPoint slides, diagrams, white board use, etc. You are expected to explain the processes or concepts in your own words using references to support your explanations. Include a reference list at the end and cite references verbally or with on screen citations. Use appropriate master’s level terminology. Include all necessary physiology and/or pathophysiology in your explanation. Use detailed explanations to teach or explain. Your classmates and professional colleagues are your audience . Reference a minimum of two sources; you may cite your etext as a source. Use APA format to style your visual aids and cite your sources. Include a reference page in your video. Your presentation must include both audio and visual components and be professional in nature. Possible topics: Explain endocrine feedback in terms of short, long, and ultra-short feedback loops Explain the two general effects hormones have on cells: direct effects, or obvious changes in cell function, and permissive effects, or less obvious changes that facilitate cell function Explain methods used to measure the levels of hormones in the plasma Describe the causative factor and manifestations for the hypersecretion of prolactin Discuss the causes of hyperpituitarism and hypopituitarism with consideration of the populations at highest risk for the development of the disorders Explain the two general effects hormones have on cells: direct effects, or obvious changes in cell function, and permissive effects, or less obvious changes that facilitate cell function NURS530 Characterize the manifestations of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism Explain the process of thermoregulation Explain the process of glucose regulation Discuss the similarities of breast cancer invasion and normal mammary gland branching Explain the role of myoepithelial cells in invasive breast cancer Explain the causes of delayed or incomplete puberty Relate luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels to the stages of follicle development and to progesterone and estrogen production Describe the functions of the female breast, and discuss the cyclic, hormone-mediated changes in the breast tissue during the reproductive years and with pregnancy Describe the conditions present and pathophysiology of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) Describe the clinical presentation and pathophysiology of gonorrhea Describe the clinical presentation and pathophysiology of hepatitis B Describe the clinical presentation and pathophysiology of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) Propose a topic of your own interest from the assigned readings; however, it must be submitted to your instructor for approval You will post your finished presentation here for grading, and you will post a copy to the discussion board thread “Final Video Presentations” to be shared and reviewed with your classmates.
What the NURS530 video assignment requires
- 01A four to seven minute audio-video presentation on the chosen topic.
- 02An explanation of the two general effects hormones have on cells.
- 03At least one type of visual aid such as PowerPoint slides.
- 04The topic choice posted to the discussion board thread before starting.
- 05The completed video uploaded and submitted through the required tool.
Seven minutes, one distinction, one example
Framing the distinction
State in one sentence what makes the two effects different.
What the assessor is likely looking for
A distinction a listener could repeat afterwards.
Direct effects
Explain receptor binding and an observable change in cell function.
What the assessor is likely looking for
A mechanism traced from binding to visible effect.
Permissive effects
Explain a hormone that enables another's action without producing its own.
What the assessor is likely looking for
Enabling distinguished from weakly acting.
One worked pairing
Carry a single hormone pair from receptor to clinical presentation.
What the assessor is likely looking for
A clinical consequence, which turns definition into explanation.
Why it matters clinically
Say what a clinician does differently knowing this.
What the assessor is likely looking for
Practice relevance for an advanced practice audience.
The visual aid
Design slides that carry the diagram while you carry the words.
What the assessor is likely looking for
Slides that would be useless without the narration.
Where endocrine physiology is documented
Recommended databases
- NCBI Bookshelf
- PubMed Central
- CINAHL
- WCU Library
Search sequence
- 1.Read an endocrine overview to fix the direct and permissive definitions.
- 2.Look up your chosen hormone pair in a dedicated source.
- 3.Search the clinical presentation your example produces so the consequence is accurate.
- 4.Check receptor and second messenger detail before drawing the diagram.
Reference shortlist
These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Before you record
Common mistakes
- Preparing paper-length content for a seven minute recording.
- Explaining permissive effects as simply weaker direct effects.
- Giving the definition without a clinical consequence.
- Reading dense slides aloud instead of using them as support.
- Choosing a topic already taken by a classmate.
Submission checklist
- Is your script timed and inside the limit?
- Are direct and permissive effects clearly separated?
- Does your example include a clinical consequence?
- Does the visual aid support rather than duplicate the narration?
- Was the topic posted to the thread first?
