DQ 1 :Now that you have studied all the different theories of psychotherapy, what theory do you feel has the strongest approach for the population you may want to work with?

A preference question that is graded as a fit argument. Name the population first, then argue the theory against it, and treat the second half about learning more than one approach as the part that carries the marks.

What PCN 500 Week 8 DQ 1 is really asking

This arrives in the last week of a survey course, which tells you what it is testing. It is not asking which theory you liked. It is asking whether, having been shown six models in eight weeks, you can hold several of them in view at once and argue for one against a population you have actually named. The word doing the work is population. A post that opens with a theory and then hunts for people it might suit has the argument backwards, and it reads that way to an instructor who has marked forty of them. Open instead with the population you intend to work with, specified far enough to constrain the choice: adolescents in a school setting, adults in outpatient substance use treatment, couples in a community agency. The claim then becomes testable, because a reader can ask whether that model has been studied with those people, and your evidence either answers that or it does not.

The second half is where most of the marks sit and where most posts run out of words. Do not answer it with a shrug about staying open-minded. There is a real literature here, and naming it raises the post. Common-factors research finds that the alliance, client factors and expectancy account for a substantial share of outcome variance across models, which is an argument for breadth rather than for loyalty to one school. Set against that, the integration literature distinguishes technical eclecticism, which borrows techniques without borrowing the theory, from theoretical integration, which fuses the models themselves, and from assimilative integration, which keeps one home base and imports from elsewhere. Say which of those three you expect to practise and why your chosen population pushes you toward it. Close by tying the answer to scope of competence, because in counselling the limit on how many approaches you use is an ethical one and not a matter of appetite.

Likely learning objectives

  • State a target population with enough specificity to constrain a theory choice.
  • Argue one theory against that population rather than in the abstract.
  • Distinguish technical eclecticism, theoretical integration and assimilative integration.
  • Tie the breadth of your approach to scope of competence.

Do you think that you will need to learn more than one approach? Why?

02

Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01A named population and setting, not a general client description.
  2. 02One theory chosen, with the reason stated as fit rather than preference.
  3. 03Evidence that the theory has been studied with that population.
  4. 04A direct answer to whether you will need more than one approach.
  5. 05A reason for that answer that names a form of integration.
03

Name the population before you name the theory

01

The population, stated first

Name the population and setting you intend to work with, and say what about them will constrain the choice.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A population specific enough that a theory could fail to suit it.

02

The theory, argued as fit

State the chosen theory and connect its mechanism to what that population presents with.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A mechanism named, not a list of the theory's general strengths.

03

The evidence for that pairing

Cite a study or review of that model used with that population or setting.

What the assessor is likely looking for

Evidence about the pairing rather than about the model in general.

04

Whether one approach is enough

Answer the second question and give the reason, using the language of integration.

What the assessor is likely looking for

One of eclecticism, theoretical integration or assimilative integration named.

05

The limit set by competence

Close on scope of competence and what training the additional approach would require.

What the assessor is likely looking for

An ethical framing of breadth rather than an enthusiasm for it.

04

Where theory-to-population fit is documented

Recommended databases

  • PubMed Central
  • NCBI Bookshelf
  • PsycINFO
  • GCU Library

Search sequence

  1. 1.Search your chosen theory together with your population as a phrase, not separately.
  2. 2.Read a common-factors review before writing the second half of the post.
  3. 3.Look up the eclecticism and integration distinction so you use the terms correctly.
  4. 4.Check the ACA Code of Ethics section on scope of competence.

Reference shortlist

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Review before citing

A worked account of one model's mechanism, useful as the template for your fit argument.

06

Before you post to the Week 8 forum

Common mistakes

  • Opening with the theory and finding a population to justify it afterwards.
  • Leaving the population as 'clients' or 'people with anxiety' with no setting attached.
  • Answering the second half with a general statement about being flexible.
  • Treating common-factors findings as proof that theory does not matter.
  • Ignoring scope of competence, which is what actually limits how many models you use.

Submission checklist

  • Have you named a population and a setting?
  • Does your theory claim say why it fits those people specifically?
  • Have you cited evidence for that model with that population?
  • Did you answer the second question directly rather than by implication?
  • Have you named which form of integration you expect to practise?
