Explain each step of the systems development life cycle (SDLC) for a nursing informatics project DQ

Two parts that share one spine. The job description in part two has to be written stage by stage against the life cycle you set out in part one, or the halves do not connect.

One spine, used twice

The two parts are not independent, and treating them as though they were is the structural mistake this assignment punishes. Part one sets out the life cycle; part two writes a job description against it, stage by stage. So decide your stage list first and keep it constant across both halves. The conventional five are planning and requirements definition, analysis, design, implementation and testing, and maintenance and evaluation; some texts split implementation from testing. Whichever you choose, name the stages once and use exactly those names again in part two, because a job description organised around different headings tells the marker that the second half was written without reference to the first. Decide it before writing either half and keep the list in view while drafting the second, because the two documents are graded partly on whether they describe the same process. Any standard variant is defensible; inconsistency is not.

The reason nurse leaders belong in every stage is worth arguing rather than asserting, and the argument is strongest at the two ends. At requirements, nurses hold the workflow knowledge that determines whether the specification describes the work as it is actually performed rather than as the policy manual imagines it, and a requirement missed here is expensive to add later. At maintenance and evaluation, nurses are the ones who see the workarounds, and a documented workaround is evidence that the design failed rather than that staff are non-compliant. In between, nurse involvement in design is what keeps click burden and alert volume in view, both of which have documented links to clinician burnout. For the job description itself, write it as a job: a title, a reporting line, time commitment, and for each stage a specific deliverable that this person produces, since a role defined by attendance at meetings is not a role.

Likely learning objectives

  • Maintain one consistent stage list across both halves of an assignment.
  • Argue nurse involvement from the specific knowledge nurses hold at each stage.
  • Recognise workarounds as design evidence rather than non-compliance.
  • Write a role description in terms of deliverables rather than participation.

03

The stages, then the role at each stage

01

The stages, named once

Set out the life cycle stages you will use throughout both halves.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A stage list stated explicitly and then held constant.

02

Why nurses belong at requirements

Argue from workflow knowledge and the cost of a missed requirement.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A specific knowledge claim rather than a participation claim.

03

Nurse contribution in analysis and design

Give two named contributions with examples, including usability and alert burden.

What the assessor is likely looking for

Two contributions, each with a concrete example.

04

Testing, implementation and go-live

What the assessor is likely looking for

Clinical validation named as a distinct step.

05

Maintenance and evaluation

Explain workaround detection and optimisation after go-live.

What the assessor is likely looking for

Workarounds read as design failure evidence.

06

The job description

Write title, reporting line, time commitment and a deliverable per stage.

What the assessor is likely looking for

A document someone could actually recruit against.

04

Where system implementation evidence sits

Recommended databases

  • PubMed Central
  • HealthIT.gov
  • NIST
  • CINAHL

Search sequence

  1. 1.Fix your stage list from one source rather than combining several.
  2. 2.Search record implementation studies for where clinical input is structured.
  3. 3.Look up usability testing methods for the design stage contribution.
  4. 4.Read on alert burden and burnout for the design and evaluation arguments.

06

Before you submit the assignment

Common mistakes

  • Using different stage names in the two halves of the assignment.
  • Asserting that nurses should be involved without saying what they know.
  • Writing a job description around meetings rather than deliverables.
  • Skipping maintenance and evaluation, which is where workarounds surface.
  • Describing the documentation system instead of the role.

Submission checklist

  • Do both halves use the same stage names in the same order?
  • Is nurse involvement justified by specific knowledge at each stage?
  • Does the job description name a deliverable per stage?
  • Are there two named ways nurse leaders contribute, with examples?
  • Have you covered maintenance and evaluation?
