Factors influencing your decision to obtain a BSN degree.
Seven criteria and one of them offers you an unusual permission: if no socialisation stage fits, invent one. Taking that seriously is what separates this from a career statement.

The socialisation criterion is the one with teeth
Six of the seven criteria are the ordinary furniture of a professional development paper and will look much the same in every submission. The socialisation criterion is different, and it is where a marker looking to differentiate will look. It asks you to take a named model, place yourself in one of its stages, and justify the placement, and then it adds a permission most assignments never give: if none of the stages fits, build your own. That is an invitation to do a small piece of theoretical work rather than to pick the stage that sounds most flattering. The classic models describe a graduate's movement from an idealised picture of practice, through the shock of the real workplace, to a resolution, and they were built on new graduates entering practice for the first time. The models were not built to describe a nurse of ten years returning to the classroom, and noticing that is the opening the criterion leaves you.
That last fact is what makes the escape clause useful to an experienced nurse. If you are already working as an associate degree nurse, you are not a novice entering practice; you are an experienced clinician re-entering formal education, and the shock stage may describe your classroom experience rather than your clinical one. Saying that, and proposing a stage the model lacks, is a stronger answer than forcing yourself into a category that does not fit. For the rest, keep the goals genuinely measurable and dated, because two short-term and two long-term goals without timelines are wishes. The barriers section works best when it is specific enough to be uncomfortable, and the mentors section should name what each person or system actually provides, since a list of supportive people is not a support system. Four pages is not much room for seven criteria, so budget the length before drafting.
Likely learning objectives
- Apply a named socialisation model and justify a stage placement.
- Extend or adapt a model when the evidence of your own experience does not fit it.
- Distinguish the baccalaureate role from the current role concretely.
- Write short- and long-term goals with dates and measures attached.

Review every instruction before using the planning guidance that follows.
In a Microsoft Word document of 4-5 pages formatted in APA style, develop a strategic plan to aid your transition into the role of a professional nurse. In your paper, address each of the following criteria: Discuss factors influencing your decision to obtain a BSN degree. Discuss how the role of the baccalaureate differs from your current role. Describe new opportunities that may be available after degree completion. Examine one of the two models of socialization discussed in your readings and place yourself in one of the stages. Provide your rationale for that placement. If none of the models or stages fits your experience, create your own model (or stage). Identify two professional short-term goals. Identify two professional long-term goals. Expound upon the challenges and barriers you face in pursuit of your short- and long-term goals. Identify mentors and support systems that aid you in overcoming challenges and barriers necessary to achieve goals.
Course-wide instructions that accompany this question
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
What the transition plan must contain
- 01A 4-5 page APA paper setting out a strategic plan for the transition.
- 02Factors influencing your decision to obtain a BSN degree.
- 03How the baccalaureate role differs from your current role, and new opportunities after completion.
- 04One socialisation model examined, with yourself placed in a stage and a rationale given.
- 05Two short-term and two long-term professional goals.
- 06Challenges and barriers, and the mentors and support systems that help you overcome them.

Search sequence
- 1.Read the socialisation model in a primary source before placing yourself in it.
- 2.Search transition to practice research for the evidence behind the stages.
- 3.Look up the Future of Nursing education recommendations for the BSN factors.
- 4.Find a mentorship source so the support section has evidence behind it.

Before you submit the strategic plan
Common mistakes
- Choosing a socialisation stage because it sounds positive rather than because it fits.
- Ignoring the permission to create your own model or stage.
- Writing goals with no date or measure attached.
- Describing the BSN role in terms of knowledge rather than of what you may do.
- Listing supportive people without saying what each provides.
Submission checklist
- Have you named the socialisation model and justified your stage?
- Did you consider whether the model actually fits an experienced nurse?
- Do all four goals have a date and a measure?
- Are the barriers specific to you rather than generic?
- Does each mentor or support have a stated function?
